In bygone days, tin miners in Cornwall spent long hours underground chiseling away at the hard rock to extract the precious metal. For sustenance, they ate food that was encased in hard pastry envelopes. The pasties in those days were much bigger, and the pastry was mainly packaging, would be discarded. Today, our pasties are smaller, and we can enjoy a wholesome meal, including the pastry!
